Did you know the reason that we’re taking on another 4Challenge is you?

The scary fact is by 2020 1 in 2 of us will be affected by cancer in our lifetimes - 1 in 2. Take a look at the people around you and think about that stat. That includes you, members of your family, people you work with and your closest friends.

That is why we’re riding for another year to raise money to support Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. The charity needs to raise £2 million each year just to keep funding current projects, including research, treatment and care programmes.

Over 18,000 patients are currently under the care of Weston Park Hospital, and this adds up to 150,000 individual patient visits each year for individuals from Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, Worksop and Chesterfield and Sheffield.

The Target

Last year 4Challenge exceeded all expectations and raised over £30,000, £10,000 of which was used to provide Digital Information Systems in the Radiotherapy and Outpatients waiting areas of Weston Park Hospital.

Now fully installed, the systems allow the hospital to give messages to patients and families on screens throughout the clinics. This provides up to date clinic times, helpful information and TV screens, all aimed to help keep patients informed and more relaxed before their appointments.

This year we’re upping the stakes and riding to raise £33,000 to fund Weston Park Hospital’s Complimentary Therapies Project.

ComplEmentary Therapies

Complementary therapies make a real difference to cancer patients and patients and their carers can enjoy up to four free sessions as part of their treatment, including massage, reflexology, reiki, hypnotherapy / relaxation, shiatsu and auricular acupuncture.

Auricular acupuncture (or ear acupuncture) is a form of complementary therapy positioning very fine needles into the outer ear, and there is significant evidence to suggest that it can reduce both the severity and frequency of hot flushes in many people. It is known to have a calming effect on the central nervous system.

Cancer Support Centre Manager, Karen Holmes said, “When the cancer charity started funding the auricular acupuncture sessions back in April 2015, we never imagined that we would have such a big uptake and positive impact on patients’ lives.”

“Looking closely at the feedback gained from those who have attended the acupuncture sessions - a staggering 89% of attendees reported improvement for hot flushes, 72% reported improvement in sleep and 53% reported improvement in general well-being.”

Make A Difference

We are both honoured and determined to take on 4Challenge 2016 to support this project and make an even bigger difference to the lives of those touched by cancer in our region.

This project is for your family, your friends, your colleagues, and for you.

Please help us reach help us reach the target. If everyone you know donated £10 just think about the impact we could have!

Ever grateful for your support…thank you!
